Plenty is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to conduct specialized research of various plants and crop systems in a modern, high-technology hydroponic farms and growth chambers. This person will be responsible for managing teams and providing techniques and empirical research methods to improve crop quality and enhance harvest weight through advanced growth chamber trials. The world is dependent on a level of agricultural optimization that can only be delivered through AI-driven methodologies. The purpose of this role is to generate the data necessary to train machine learning programs in management and optimization techniques.
In this role you will be operating the Plenty growth chambers and experimental chambers to generate environmental data on a crop by crop and environment by environment basis. Data is critical to our success as a company, and this role is all about the data. You’ll spend much of your day managing the teams that execute trials that are both human directed as well as trials which are directed by our artificial intelligence. Building a powerful artificial intelligence requires not just data, but the right kind of data, and the responsibility of this role is to help us and and our AI to better understand the effects of environment on plant genetics and phenotype. In this role you’ll get a chance to see plant responses and environment-interactions that have not been documented before, add to our fundamental understanding of plant biochemistry, physiology, and morphology, and help to usher in the next agricultural revolution. What you'll do
Work with teams of plant scientists to implement growth chamber trials exploring the limits of environment on phenotype
Work to keep chambers running, and managing experimental inputs to keep trials on track
Design experiments to explore unique environmental factors and inputs
Oversee data collection and data systems to ensure quality and fidelity of collection, and export
Work with computer science to analyze and interpret data correctly, and ensure that our AI has the best and most appropriate data.
What we're looking for
A background with greenhouse or growth chamber trials at scale
Experience with data at scale, digital and automated collection methods
Experience with basic machine learning or advanced analytics a plus
Excitement about the ability to use environment to turn genes off and on
Handiness- keeping chambers running requires an ability to occasionally turn a wrench
Experience managing others and ensuring that timelines and benchmarks are being met
PhD in an agricultural or biological field that is data-rich
A comfort in fast-paced, rapidly evolving environments
Excitement around helping to drive the largest growth chamber-based data generation experiment in the history of agriculture.
