Role and responsibilities
SSA seeks a machine learning researcher to join its Portfolio and Risk Research group. This role is responsible for advancing new research, thought leadership, and innovative investment applications focused on the thoughtful use of techniques spanning machine learning, artificial intelligence, and related quantitative and data-driven methods. The individual will work in close coordination with senior team members to develop, test, present, and maintain a pipeline of research applications based on machine learning. The focus of this role is on thoughtful use of sophisticated techniques to solve investment problems and prototype new solutions for our clients. While this is not a pure technology role, the qualified individual will need to understand and design appropriate research infrastructure and code, including leveraging capabilities from throughout the company. Specific responsibilities of the position include:
  • Lead research projects from concept to completion, collaborating effectively with senior research leaders as well as peers
  • Prototype new investment strategies, methodologies and products for State Street’s institutional client base, focusing on the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques
  • Formulate and test quantitative research hypotheses with emphasis on practical implementation
  • Co-author compelling white papers and research reports
  • Create and deliver exceptional research presentations to senior management and clients via in-person meetings, conference calls, and other forums
  • Serve as a subject area expert and engage in collaborative projects with adjacent research groups
  • Develop and maintain a scalable code base and research infrastructure; consistently strive to enhance quality, efficiency and re-usability
  • Evaluate and implement new technology solutions as relevant to broader goals
  • Work hands-on with a wide variety of data sets relevant to investment strategy design; proactively manage, analyze and transform data to meet the needs of each project and the broader team’s goals
  • Collaborate effectively with other team members and colleagues throughout State Street; act with the highest level of integrity and adopt an owner’s mindset for managing risk in the course of business

Qualifications
  • 3-5 years’ work experience in investment management, investment research, data science, or a similar field involving quantitative techniques for data and analysis
  • Advanced degree in a quantitative field such as finance, economics, mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline
  • Strong working knowledge of theoretical and practical concepts in machine learning, including statistical building blocks, classical methods, recent developments, and state-of-the-art techniques
  • Strong familiarity with concepts in investment management, asset allocation, risk management, and investment strategy design
  • Approach research with an open mind and strong intellectual curiosity
  • Ability to present complex ideas in a clear, concise and effective manner is essential
  • Highly proficient coding skills, ideally Matlab and Python, with practical experience implementing solutions to real-world problems
  • Experience working directly with databases desired
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills; experience in a client-facing role or with public speaking is a plus
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining strict attention to detail
