Assistant Research Engineer -Machine Learning and Autonomous Driving

California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH), a research and development program of the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking an Assistant Research Engineer to lead research projects in Machine Learning (ML) and Autonomous Driving (AD) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Appointment Length

This is a 12-month, 100%-time appointment. Anticipated start date: July 1, 2019.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate's main duties and responsibilities will consist of
  • Leading research projects on machine learning, autonomous driving, and intelligent transportation systems.
  • ing state-of-the-art ML algorithms to address AD and ITS related problems.
  • Coding new and existing algorithms, tools and technologies to enable leading edge scientific applications in ML, AD, and ITS.
  • Identifying trends in research and corresponding needs of capabilities to take on the research challenges; and to develop research capabilities and directions for the ML-AD-ITS team at California PATH
  • Fostering interactions between advanced technologies (hardware, software, languages) and domain science teams (ML, AD, transportation, traffic, etc.)
  • Overseeing research planning and conducting comprehensive data analysis, including selection of methodologies, use of computerized simulation, and real-world data analysis for system verification;
  • Supervising and conducting theoretical and experimental studies, including neural network-based problem formation, coding of software programs, creation of simulation platform, data generation, and training and testing of algorithms.
  • Preparing proposals for project funding and reports for project review.
  • Writing articles for refereed academic journals and/or conferences.
Basic Qualifications (at The Time Of Application)

Ph.D or equivalent International Degree

Additional Required Qualifications (by Start Date)

Record of peer reviewed publications

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D in Engineering or related fields.
  • At least 3 years of experience designing and conducting research.
  • At least two years of academic and/or industrial experience in ML/AD/ITS studies excluding years of graduate studies.
  • Record of peer reviewed publications in ML, AD, and/or ITS applications.
  • graduate study, academic or industrial training in machine-learning approach for engineering applications.
  • Research experience in ML based projects, including deep reinforcement learning, inverse reinforcement learning, and imitation learning, with a portfolio demonstrating past work experience and deliverables.
  • Experience in a range of engineering research methods (e.g., mathematical and statistical tools, simulation, and real world-based data-driven methods).
  • End-to-end experience with all aspects of research (problem formulation, system requirements, data generation, data analysis, verification, reporting).
  • Proposal writing experiences and skills.
  • Academic and industrial experience in vehicle safety and traffic safety.
  • Work experience with automobile manufacturers and/or technological companies.
  • Coding experience in both computer programming languages (e.g., Python, C/C++) and AI/ML development frameworks (e.g., CAFFE, TensorFlow).
  • Coding experience in traffic simulation software (e.g., SUMO) and developing simulation platforms with object-oriented programming language (e.g. Python)
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Ability to lead a team of postdoctoral, students, and associates.
  • Ability to efficiently and actively cooperate with other staff members within the organization.
  • English writing and communication skills.
Salary: Commensurate with experience
